SIP Trunking

Reliable connectivity for your onsite phone system

SIP trunking is a service that enables companies to connect their onsite IP PBX (phone system) to an Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP) for services such as inbound phone numbers and outbound call termination. It serves as a modern replacement for traditional PSTN phone lines. SIP trunking can be used over both public internet connections and private IP networks.

SIP trunk object within PBX can be configured in two different modes:

This mode is useful when you want to send a call to a specific SIP address. The SIP URI must follow this format:

<remote_number>@<remote_server>:<port>

For example:
61399997999@sipserver.com:5060
or
61399997999@111.22.33.44:5060.

Register your SIP server with us (e.g., connect your PBX to our system) and enjoy low VoIP rates along with full integration between your onsite and hosted PBX systems. This allows your PBX to call users on our system, dial out to the world, and enables PBX users to call extensions on your PBX seamlessly.

SIP trunking

Frequently asked questions

It’s not about the difference between SIP trunking and Hosted PBX, but how these two services work together. SIP trunking connects your VoIP-compatible onsite phone system to the cloud, providing connectivity to the outside world. Hosted PBX, on the other hand, is a fully functional telephony system that operates over the internet. By interconnecting these two services, you can leverage the features of Hosted PBX, such as providing inbound toll-free numbers or call recording, while still utilizing the reliability and flexibility of SIP trunking for your communication needs.

SIP trunking replaces older PSTN and ISDN phone lines by using the Internet to transmit voice data. Key benefits of SIP trunking include:

  • Lower cost compared to traditional PSTN and ISDN connections.
  • Scalability: Easily scale up or down based on the number of channels or simultaneous calls required.
  • Portability: SIP trunking can be used anywhere with Internet access, making it easy to relocate.
  • Security and Quality: SIP trunks can be configured to encrypt all voice data and support HD voice codecs, offering significantly better voice quality.

A SIP channel is used for one incoming or outgoing call, similar to a standard phone line. Each SIP trunk can support multiple SIP channels, allowing you to handle multiple simultaneous calls on the same trunk. This scalability ensures that your business can easily accommodate increased call volumes without the need for additional phone lines.

The number of channels supported by a SIP trunk is limited by your internet connection speed. However, most modern broadband connections are capable of supporting dozens of channels. For example, a 25 Mbps connection can typically support around 250+ simultaneous calls, making it a scalable and cost-effective solution for businesses with high call volumes.

The number of channels supported by your SIP trunk also depends on your onsite PBX and the codecs it supports. For example, if your PBX supports the G.729 codec, it requires only 0.03 Mbps per call, including overheads. With a reliable 8 Mbps connection, you could potentially support around 260 simultaneous calls. However, the quality of calls will be highly dependent on the reliability and stability of your internet connection. While speed is important, a stable and consistent connection is crucial for maintaining high call quality. Cheap NBN prices today enable small business to get high grade and high speed internet of above 100Mbps.

Even if your internet connection goes down, you will still be able to receive inbound calls. This is made possible through call diversion to mobile phones or alternative phone numbers. Here’s how it works: typically, an incoming call is routed to your SIP trunking system. If there’s no connection to the SIP device due to an internet outage, the call is automatically diverted to a mobile phone or any other phone number you’ve configured, ensuring you never miss an important call.

We offer discounted rates for accounts with higher call volumes. For services with a minimum monthly spend, we deduct this amount on the 1st of each month, which then becomes call credit on your account. There are no additional charges for calls up to the minimum monthly spend. Calls that exceed the minimum are billed at the standard call plan rates.
